Simon Wassereit is the Facility Manager for a large insurance company. In the past few months, this has not been a pleasant task. Above all, the damages in the server room are worrying. 　　Problems such as Mr Wassereit's often occur in office buildings and computer centres:

    Temperature and humidity values should be reliably measured and documented as evidence for acceptance and even for legal disputes, as applicable, as well as for personal documentation.

　　If defined limit values are breached, an alarm should be issued immediately so that counter measures can be implemented without delay. Damages must be avoided instead of being expensively corrected after they occur.

　　testo Saveris, the new monitoring system for measurement data, is oriented towards these requirements. A selection of precise temperature and moisture probes is available for the rooms. The measurement data is saved decentrally in the battery-operated probes and is regularly radioed to a "testo Saveris base station" – loss of data is out of the question. Alternatively, the values can also be transferred via Ethernet. The base station has an extensive memory as well as the most varied possibilities for issuing alarms, from visual signals to sending an SMS to a mobile phone.

　　System overview: The wireless probes (1) send the recorded measurement values to the base (4), which stores all values centrally. A router (2) can be used to improve the wireless transfer under difficult building conditions. By connecting a converter (3) to an Ethernet socket, the signal from a wireless probe can be converted to an Ethernet signal. In addition to wireless probes, Ethernet probes (6) can also be used which can be directly connected to the Ethernet (5).

　　The measurement data can be transferred to a PC (7) either by USB or Ethernet. Analysis and documentation of the measurements are then carried out quickly and easily with the testo Saveris-Software (8).

　　Transferring measurement data via radio enables a fast and cost-effective installation. Instead of complex cable routing from room to room, the locations can be chosen freely. With the example of office climate monitoring, you can avoid penetrating the walls with cables. The radio probe or alternatively an Ethernet probe is simply positioned within the room.

Last week he invested in a testo Saveris system with 18 probes, eight for the server rooms and ten for rooms with a "critical" climate. The installation took only a little time and the documentation and issue of alarms have functioned smoothly and automatically ever since. If the values exit the required range once, the caretaker is immediately alerted via mobile phone and inspects the air conditioning and – if necessary – calls the air conditioning mechanics. And for the Board of Directors, Mr Wassereit will compile a report at the end of the year with just a few mouse clicks that shows the readings from the past months. "To learn from criticism" – that is high art: even in Facility Management.
